Who is the backroad Christian?
Born and raised in Texas and now rooted in the hills of Northwest Arkansas, Denise Bembenek, known to readers as LD Bembenek, is a newly published author with a broad and comprehensive professional history. Having recently released her first book, The Backroad Christian, a memoir (of sorts), she currently provides a variety of remote editing, proofreading and administrative support services.
With more than 30 years of professional experience across academic, professional, legal, educational, nonprofit, and marketing disciplines, Denise’s comprehensive background includes proofreading and editing book manuscripts, academic articles, grant applications, websites, blogs, curriculum, professional communications, and print and digital marketing. Known for her meticulous attention to detail, command of language, and thoughtful editorial judgment, she brings clarity, precision, and purpose to the written word while preserving the voice and intent of the writer. She is proficient in APA, MLA, Chicago, AP, and Harvard style guidelines and has particular experience supporting academic and ESL writers.
Additionally, Denise has an extensive history in project management, operations, executive support, event coordination and administrative management as well as having spent almost a decade in the public-school classroom teaching English, Speech, and Drama.
Beyond the professional credentials, Denise is a working-class mother and grandmother, a widow, a survivor, and a woman whose journey to grace has included more than a few wrong turns along the way.
In her memoir (of sorts) The Backroad Christian, Denise opens her heart and life to readers with grit, common sense, and a slightly twisted sense of humor. A follower of Jesus Christ who is still learning what it means to live like Him, she writes candidly about the struggles, revelations, dead ends and unexpected blessings that have shaped her spiritual journey. She calls these discoveries "mile markers" — those moments that challenge old assumptions, change our direction, tell us how far we've come and remind us that even the detours can lead us somewhere worth going.
Through her writing, she hopes to connect with fellow life travelers who have stumbled along their own paths to faith, offering encouragement without pretense, honesty without judgment, and the reassurance that none of us has to have it all figured out to keep moving forward.
Mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, friend, mentor, educator, organizer, wordsmith, volunteer, gardener, lake-rat, music junkie, lifelong learner, dog rescuer, cat tolerator, and self-described tomboy, Denise wears many hats and has collected more than a few stories along the way. She is a straight-shooter, a boundary pusher, a recovering perfectionist, and a firm believer that grace has a way of finding us in the places we least expect.
BOOKS
Faith doesn’t always follow the map.
With honesty, humor, hard-earned perspective and stories from a life filled with its share of detours and backroads, The Backroad Christian explores what it means to follow Jesus when faith is anything but neat and predictable.
For anyone who has ever wondered if they’ve wandered too far, messed up too much, doubted too deeply or simply taken a road they wish they hadn’t, this book is for you.
The Backroad Christian is about those roads where we find that, sometimes, God does His best work on the backroads.
There is grace on the backroad.
There is purpose in the detour.
And there is a way home.
The first book in my road series, Travel Guides to Finding Faith, Peace and a Sense of Humor, The Backroad Christian is a collection of sometimes humorous (to me, anyway), frequently obvious, usually unsophisticated sayings, stories, quotes, observations, and reflections that I’ve found to be simple truths throughout my life. None of them are original; all of them have made a difference to me in some way.
This little collection of excerpts from life looks back on lessons, ah-ah moments and personal experiences that have guided me, often changing my direction, my mind, my heart and/or my behavior – much like mile markers on an unfamiliar road. More often than not, they are hard-earned wisdom (I use that term loosely) that comes from actually learning from the consequences of my own actions and choices. At its foundation, The Backroad Christian is a gift from my heart to yours. I hope you enjoy the journey.
In Christ and Common Sense,
LD Bembenek

"What a great book! Denise combines humor, wisdom and hard-fought faith in this easy to read story of her life and journey. I have been waiting a long time for a book like this!"

"Girl, it's GOOD!
It’s the kind of comfort you feel at the end of a long day when the air is cooling and you breathe in a big, satisfying breath before plopping down on your patio furniture and finally resting. It’s like smelling the familiar scent of your grandpa’s workshop after he’s been gone for years.
Jennifer F., AR
Reading The Backroad Christian feels like sitting on a porch swing with my favorite former teacher, listening to her tell me about life, faith, and all the shit she’s learned along the way. What impacted me most was her willingness to be so real about the road that got her here.
Services
Thoughtful work. Clear communication. Attention to every detail.
The best work often happens when we slow down, pay attention, and take the time to get things right. At The Backroad Christian, I bring that philosophy to professional writing, editing, proofreading, research, document verification, and remote administrative support. With more than 20 years of experience working with written content, complex documents, research materials, and administrative processes, I help individuals, businesses, authors, and organizations produce accurate, polished, and purposeful work.
Whether refining a manuscript, strengthening business communications, verifying information, or providing dependable behind-the-scenes support, I approach every project with care, sound judgment, and respect for the work entrusted to me. Because the details matter, and so does the journey.
